Editorial Policy:

The Ridge is an online newspaper published by upper school students at Sage Ridge School. The Ridge is written primarily for the approximately 235 students attending Sage Ridge School, and is distributed to all members of the school community. Secondary audiences which receive the newspapers include school alumni, other schools’ journalism programs, local businesses, and community subscribers.

The Ridge staff has adopted the following editorial policy to express the rights, responsibilities, and philosophy of this newspaper for the 2011-2012 school year.

The Ridge is an accessible public forum that provides information and entertainment in addition to various viewpoints on debatable issues in the form of editorials and columns. Funds for this production come from Sage Ridge School and advertising. Letters to the editor, guest columns, and all material submitted for publication must include the writer’s name, signature and class or position. Typed or legibly handwritten submissions are acceptable.

The Ridge will not print anything that newspapers deemed libelous, obscene, or in poor taste, in accordance with the Supreme Court’s justified standards. Rights are reserved to postpone, edit, or withhold from publication anything submitted which does not meet these specifications.

The meaning of any submission will not be altered, but we reserve the right to correct spelling, grammar, and punctuation when necessary. The Ridge will not intentionally invade the privacy of any person, misspell names, or publish non-factual information. Corrections will be printed when mistakes are found or brought to the attention of the staff.

Accurate reporting of fact is the goal of the staff.

By-lined opinions expressed in the opinion section are those of the writer and do not necessarily reflect the opinions of The Ridge or the advisor. Non-by-line editorials express the opinion of the editorial staff.

Additionally, The Ridge refuses to print criticism which is not constructive and not supported by facts. The Ridge is committed to the mission of the school and will weigh editorial decisions for mission appropriateness. The editors and advisor will make the final decision on all material appearing in The Ridge.

As an student forum, The Ridge sells advertisements for publicity and to help fund printing costs. We will refuse any advertisement which makes reference to illegal or controlled products, services, substances, or paraphernalia. The Ridge does not accept political or campaign advertising.

We reserve the right to refuse any advertisements deemed inappropriate by the Sage Ridge community.

Members of the staff are guided by the Canons of Journalism developed by the American Society of Newspaper Editors in 1923. This code of ethics outlines the principles of responsibility, fairness, decency, and accuracy.

The Ridge staff will do their best to uphold this policy at all costs, unless it violates the basic protections of journalists or the freedom accorded by Sage Ridge administration.
